This Texan Native Has Lived All Over The Country But She Misses Rhode Island Most
When I reflect back on my time in Rhode Island, the first thing that comes to mind is oh how I miss the food!
Dining on Federal Hill in Providence… enjoying the ambience and the heavenly meals so artfully prepared…Never have I experienced such exquisite restaurants, and I have lived in many major cities.
We could breeze into Newport on a Saturday and spend the day perusing the shops, enjoying the ocean air and the restaurants, touring the mansions, and indulging in the nightlife.
On a whim, we could take a day trip to Block Island or Martha’s Vineyard. I also loved that Boston and New York were so close (only a few hours away by car or train).
One of the most memorable experiences would have to be the Water Fires, which are unique to the city of Providence. They are bonfires that sit on top of the river and light up the entire city while enchanting music plays and the scent of (wood) smoke permeates the air. There are street performers and vendors and you can dine al fresco at the downtown restaurants while taking it all in. There’s even an actual gondola imported from Italy to provide a truly unique experience, one that’s intoxicating to all of the senses.
Lastly, I have to say I truly miss the people. Being from Texas, I initially found them to be a bit “abrupt”. As I settled in and came to know the people better, I found them to be some of the most kind-hearted and genuine people I have ever known. They welcomed me in with open arms and treated me like family. I have since lived in various cities across the country, and to this day, I miss Rhode Islanders the most.
When I left I was excited to move on and experience “bigger and better” things. The funny thing is, I ended up missing RI so much and longing to return.
