Feeling On Tapas The World

First spotted the eye-catching yellow frontage of Aguardente while weekend strolling on Governor Street a few weeks ago. It’s actually set back from the street quite a bit, so unless you’re looking for it specifically or you are on foot, you’ll probably motor right by.

After dipping into a bunch of small plates, and a ginormous sangria, there the other day, I can honestly say the food and atmosphere at this inspired tapas bar and restaurant are pretty darn marvelous! The interior is dim yet cozy with a spectacular bar area, cushy adjacent seating, and pops of color and greenery throughout. And their pleasant outdoor patio is going to be THE PLACE to be this summer. I mean, it was a chilly March afternoon when we were there but that did not deter. (See my photo below.) It’ll all have you asking yourself, “Is this PVD or Barcelona?”

The host who checked us in (can’t stress enough how important it is to make a reservation in advance because if Sunday’s business was any indicator, they do a brisk business) was welcoming — and incredibly helpful, carefully reviewing the menu with us and pointing out all the nut free options available. (For the record, I had indicated in our online reservation that the hubs has as severe tree nut allergy and also that we prefer meat-less meals.)

The menu is ginormous and a delightful mix of shareable plates with Portuguese and Guatemalan influences. We leaned heavily on the Garden Power (aka, meat free) section, opting for the Plato de Huitlacoche (sautéed mushrooms with onions, jalapeños, salt and a side satisfyingly crispy chips). We also split the Street Tacos Nopal (cactus with onions and lime with pico de gallo and queso fresco). And last but certainly not least, their Queijo Fresco (a fresh cheese wedge flavored with olive oil, paprika, onions, and garlic with a generous side of Portuguese bread).

Also, there’s no shortage of intriguing cocktails and vino. I decided on a sangria, but there was so much that sounded absolutely delish.

If you’re looking for somewhere new (we all get in a food rut now and again), I suggest making a res there, whether you want to sit indoors for a romantic date nite with your s.o. or you’re wanting to meet your friends for some sangria and a mini feast of scrumptious eats.

Find Aguardente at 12 Governor Street in Providence, RI.
