The Cozy Cafe In PVD Where You'll Want To Meet Your Crew For Breakfast This Winter

Sometimes in the seemingly non-stop search for the next big thing and what’s new, new, NEW, we end up forgeting our old favorites. Those timeless classics - like a pair Ray Bans or Levi’s 501’s or incredible coffee brewed not in a Keurig but in a percolator - that we can pretty much depend on to always be there and have our backs when we need them most. Like when we’re sleep deprived (sunglasses , a great cuppa java, and a good solid undereye concealer, all essentials) or sick and tired (byeeeeee) of jeggings and skinny jeans.

Well, the eatery equivalent of all those and more (think navy suit, only paired with some Stan Smith sneakers instead of dress shoes) is Benefit Juice Bar & Cafe on (where else?) Benefit Street in Providence. We were there yesterday late morning and it was marvelous. No bells and whistles, just a comfy meets nostalgic interior and tasty, fresh food and hot drinks.

We ordered two of their Chocoholic’s Cocoas (My husband kept raving about his and he isn’t one to dole out the compliments freely, that’s all I’m saying.) and I added on a bowl of their homemade granola cereal with freshly cut apples and some cinnamon on top.

So, so good (For the record their menu is quite extensive and includes teas, different Lavazza expresso drinks, sandwiches, and sweets - just in case you’re not a fan of cocoa or granola.) and it all feels as though you’re sitting in the kitschy kitchen of a clever, fun friend. Familiar but never boring. Welcoming without any fawning or the dreaded “hovering” style of service.

Now I’ve always adored their old-timey white fridge in the corner near the record player and the bookshelves, and the fabulous news is that it’s still alive and kicking with plenty of stickers (including one with an image of Jack Kerouac…remember back in the 90’s when it seemed like every Lit major was carrying around something by JK?) and magnets.

And their Art Wall (photo below) gets me every time because it just feels so organic with RISD being a neighbor and all.

If you haven’t been in a while, you’ll def want to revisit this charming cafe this season (and why not a walk down the historic street while you’re in the area). If you’ve never been, all I will say is that you’re really missing out on one of the capital city’s best casual spots.
