One Of My Favorite Local Lunch Spots Is Open For Carryout And OMG

With the exception of some quick strolls around Roger Williams Park and Pawtuxet Village, I have not really been anywhere since the beginning of March. When I heard that Shayna’s in Wickford was opening for carryout and curbside pickup, though, I twisted my husband’s arm (not literally) and we zipped over yesterday afternoon.

Our time there actually overlapped with the North Kingstown High School Graduation Parade. I don’t have any photos or videos, but it was a boisterous event, with cars, trucks, and vans all decked out in signs, banners, balloons. Also, there was no shortage of horn blowing and of course, grads cheering, waving energetically, and whooping it up in the passing vehicles.

With hand sanitizer and masks in tow, we had arrived on Brown Street not knowing what to expect. It was one of those perfect, sunny Sundays in June that pandemic or not, you don’t want to waste staring at a screen or sitting cooped up inside your house. Much to my relief, most of the people who were out and about — and there were many — were wearing masks and praticing social distancing.

We had decided in advance that we would order from the takeout window (which used to be their “ice cream window” back when they had introduced the cold treat to their menu…sadly it is no longer available) and then bring our sandwiches and drinks over to the dock area. The young woman who took our order was masked up and gloved and we didn’t have to wait a crazy amount of time for our food either which was an added plus. I ordered my usual, their Peace Train (vegetarian) sandwhich, while the hubs opted for tuna salad. Also, two lemonades but tbh I didn’t drink much of mine because I’m still avoiding public bathrooms for the foreseeable future. (For the record, my mom’s high risk and while I do want to get out a bit right now, I want to continue to be cautious.)

Our sandwiches were fantastic as always and luckily we were able to find an empty bench nearby. Unfortunately all the seats overlooking the water were taken, but what the heck was I expecting on such a stunning afternoon around these parts? If we had brought our own chairs (note to self), we probbly could have set ourselves up in a spot overlooking the boats. I mean, this COVID crisis may just turn me into one of those people who has a beach chair or two in their trunk, who knows?

Well, that’s all for now.

If this sounds like a fun-tastic way to spend a few hours this month and beyond, go to their site for hours, menu, and more.
