You Can Go Fly A Kite In Newport With A Little Help From This Store On Wheels

We were in Newport yesterday doing photos with Lisette Rooney and tbh I had every intention of writing about the restaurant where we had breakfast immediately following.

After we took a spin down The Drive — aka, Ten Mile Drive or Ocean Drive — and spotted a kite truck parked at Brenton Point Park, everything else took a backseat.

I mean, Brenton Point is an ideal spot for kite flying because of the wind coming off the water (even on the hottest of July or August days) but who knew there’s a truck that pops up every spring and summer where you can shop for and purchase a kite and string on the spot?

Ron from Newport Kites has been in the biz for around 20 years, starting with a brick and mortar on Thames before switching things up to a mobile store a while back.

He also has a shop on Martha’s Vineyard in case you’re making plans to visit MV soon.

Thankfully he did help us put together the 47” Tie Dye Butterfly that we finally decided on. I cannot stress this enough: We are NOT handy and there are tons of different kites to choose from.

Full disclosure, he takes plastic, just not AMEX, so you will want to plan accordingly.

We also spotted several food trucks yesterday afternoon, including Del’s, which is a Rhode Island spring and summer must, and another selling lobster tacos.

I hear there may be a number of different food trucks making appearances on a rotating basis (yayyyy) going forward too.

Factor in the spectacular views, not to mention the close proximity to the Lawn at Castle Hill (the absolute BEST spot for al fresco cocktails and spirits this time of year), and you have one magical afternoon.

As always, if you wind up getting a kite at Ron’s mobile store after reading this, please let him know you found out about him via Patty J and PattyJ.com.
