You Can Now Cut Your Own Flowers At One Of My Favorite Farms In Rhode Island

It’s brand-y new this month in South County and only going to get better as the weeks fly by!

In case you haven’t already heard, the terrific folks at The Farmer’s Daughter now have a special area — past the greenhouses and behind the hydrangeas — where you can cut your own fresh flowers. (Cut your own is probably the fastest growing trend this summah in New England! That and luxe picnics, but we already talked about those.)

Or you can always pretend to and have your best bud snap some fandids (faux candids) of you for uploading to social.

As with everything else they do (I challenge you to find a prettier garden center and farm in our fair state), this is done in such a civilized and lovely manner. For starters they provide the buckets and scissors, so need to schlepp your own. There is understandably a fee if you want to take their buckets home, however.

PS — You’ll want to consider a straw or canvas hat also. After all, too much sun will not only wreck havoc on your skin, it will do a number on your hair, especially if you color it.

I hear that the Chinese forget-me-nots (or Cynoglossum amabile) are in full bloom right now. On top of those, I for one am really looking forward to the dahlias that are due to pop up in August.

And I would strongly suggest, if at all possible, making plans for an upcoming afternoon during the week in order to beat the crowds that flock there on the weekends. (I was there around 2:30 on a sunny and scorchingly hot Friday and it was pretty low key for almost a half hour. Guess everyone else was at the beach.)

And never fear, you can still pick up plenty of in-season and locally grown veggies at their farm-stand area that looks out on the parking lot, either before or after your cutting session.

I grabbed a bunch of tomatoes (including a greenie), cukes, peppers, and a mini eggplant which fried up quite nicely.

The Farmer’s Daughter is located at 76 Mooresfield Road in South Kingstown.

As always, if after seeing this, you motor over to TFD, please do let them know you found out about them here via Patty J and PattyJ.com.
