I’ve lived my whole entire life in Rhode Island (I like to say I lived on the West Side of Providence before it was hep and back then it was referred to as the West End), but had never ever been to Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge until the other day.

The hubbie and I were wowed by the beauty of this sanctuary-esque peninsula between the Sakonnet River and Rhode Island Sound at the southernmost section of Middletown.

The ocean views and breeze — and the unspoiled rocky coastline !!!

The 242 acre refuge is perfect for walking, hiking, and bird watching.

We also passed a couple of guys with fishing gear, I understand it is known for great fishing if that’s your thing.

Admission is free and the 2.4 miles of (looping) trails are ideal for the entire family. Please leave the pups at home, tho.

In addition to coastline, birds, and beaucoup wild flowers, the refuge is also home to deer, migrating ducks, and apparently a “monitored” pack of coyotes. (Kinda relieved we didn’t run into them, lol.)

There’s also the gorgeous Sachuest (also known as 2nd) Beach down the road but we didn’t have time to stop and enjoy it. (Next time, for sure.)

Find Sachuest Point at 769 Sachuest Point Road in Middletown.
