Brunch Is Back At This Iconic Newport Restaurant And We Can't Wait To Go
You may already be familiar with Scales & Shells on Thames.
It’s the kind of restaurant that Newport residents and tourists alike rave about.
And if you don’t see your friends (both the real life and the online ones) checking in from there, it’s probably because they don’t want word about how awesome the food is to get out because THAT would make it even more difficult to get a table. (Their dinner menu is famously only view-able via a list written out on an old school chalkboard adjacent to the open kitchen and main bar.)
The great news is that they have reintroduced their BRUNCH MENU (we were invited in the Spring on 2019 when they 1st rolled out a Sunday brunch in their Half Shell Oyster Room & Bar) with modern classics with special City By The Sea twists like lemon ricotta pancakes (a personal fave of your truly…theirs is made with fresh whipped cream, lemon zest and fresh strawberries 🍓), a crab cake egg sandwich, and a smoked salmon omelette.
I mean, it doesn’t get any better than that, am I right?
But, alas, it does because they also have gorgeous cocktails like a Scales Bloody Mary, Afternoon in Newport (pamplemousse liquor, orange bitters, prosecco), and Pimm’s Cup (pimm’s #1, cucumber, strawberry, mint, lemon, soda).
Speaking of which, when I was there with my friend G., the bartender made us mocktail versions of that last drink and they were so darn good.
If you’re interested in giving it a whirl, it’s first come, first served — no reservations — on Saturdays (why not change things up with a SATURDAY late brekkie of Eggs On Thames and a nice Strawberry Basil Lemonade?) and Sundays, so you will want to get there on the early side.
Hours are 10am to 2pm and I bet people will start lining up before 10 o’clock.
Also, get there before all the out of towners start rolling in during peak summer season, lol.
