When I was a kid and we would stay in Dennis Port (Cape Cod, Massachusetts), there was Depo’s Spa, a quaint and diner-style establishment for coffee and an English, coffee cabinets, and fries.

Well, Depo’s is long gone but Franklin Spa on Spring Street in Newport (a stone’s throw from Thames) is still going strong — and how terrific is THAT!

Early birds and residents in-the-know in the City By The Sea (wink, wink) are already aware of this Old World eatery love their omelettes, fresh squeezed oj, stuffed French toast and pancakes.

Many mornings during peak season, the line for a table at this no-frills 6am to 1pm establishment (no step and repeats, flower walls or other doodads to distract you) with that fabulous, mint condition Coca Cola sign is out the door, so plan accordingly to avoid disappointment.

Hopefully you can grab one of the coveted seats, at the counter or elsewhere, and enjoy their coffee, classic am menu or a hamburger and French fries.

It’s not on the radar of most of the local food bloggers, but someone from Goop (maybe GP herself) did pop in a few years ago and ended up including it in one of their guides which is major on a global level.

Find Franklin Spa at 229 Spring Street in Newport, Rhode Island.
