We Had Dinner At This Tiny Restaurant In Providence And Wow
Open since Fall 2022, in the spot in Luongo Square in Providence where North got started (they eventually moved over to The Dean Hotel downtown), Pickerel has been racking up a very devoted following.
When I told a friend of mine about it recently, after a return visit to the West Side Of PVD in search of lunch food, she flipped because she lives for great noodle restaurants.
That’s when I knew I had to get there for din din asap.
So, fast forward to last Friday night when the hubs and I motored over about a half hour before they were scheduled to open — because I’d read multiple things saying that folks line up to get a table most evenings.
We were greeted and seated immediately (we opted to sit at one of the tiny tables next to the bar, the small but chic interior looks as though it can seat maybe 20-25 guests in all) and after about a half hour, the place really started filling up.
The hubs and I went with some hot (hibiscus) tea but the drink menu at this micro noodle bar was pretty tempting, from local brews (including one from the Moniker Brewery a few blocks away on West Fountain Street) to Chilian wine and yes, a garlic-infused craft cocktail.
We started with their Cabbage Caesar which was unexpected fluffy and fun to eat, a mountain of shredded cabbage, yuzu dressong, lemon, parm, and ichimi.
Next I went with the Spicy Sesame Chilled Mazemen with the egg, a cold vegetarian dish with sesame paste, seared tofu, cucumber, onion, and fried garlic.
Tom who, again is super picky, got a bowl with chicken broth, rice and spices. And loved it.
Take your friends from the ‘burbs here and they’ll think you’re a rock star! The desserts are legendary and that’s one thing that we missed out on because we had to fly (off to a live show we had tix for).
Also: The menu is always changing (exciting) and it’s strictly walk-in…first come, first served, so…I recommend getting there early to make doubly sure you’ll get seated.
Find Pickerel at 3 Luongo Square in Providence, Rhode Island. They are open Thursday through Sunday, starting at 5pm.
