You Can Tour This American Revolutionary Hero's House In Coventry And Wow

Don’t get me wrong, I’m one of the first people over-posting from pumpkin patches and farms come October.

That being said, if (like me) you’re also looking for things to do this month that don’t involve gourds, corn mazes or tractors, then you still have two weeks or so to visit and take an official tour of Spell Hall (aka, the Nathanael Greene Homestead) on 20 Taft Street in Coventry.

Can I get a Huzza? (For the record, that, and not huzzah, is apparently the word people used back in the days of the American Revolution when they wanted to express wild excitement. I just know someone’s gonna @ me, though.)

General Nathanael Greene — a native of Rhode Island and Quaker born pacifist, he went on to become George Washington’s right hand man during the fight for American Independence (he was the go-to for battle plans and such), quite chummy with Alexander Hamilton, and famous for having a home library boasting well over 300 books (nothing wrong with being bookish) — had the house built on 2,000 acres and lived there from its completion in 1770 until around 1776.

In 1783, Greene along with his wife Katherine “Caty” Littlefield Greene and children (he named his first born son after GW and his daughter after Martha btw) relocated to Newport and then later, Georgia.

It was his older brother Jacob who took over the Homestead which was occupied by direct descendants of the family until 1899.

Sadly in the early 1900’s, the house tumbled into disrepair for a spell (get it, SPELL) before being saved by the non-profit General Nathanael Greene Homestead Association in 1924.

Of course, there’s so much more to General Greene’s and Spell Hall’s story.

All the more reason to embark on this fun little Rhody excursion for yourself this fall. (One writer I found online went so far as to refer to the property as “Rhode Island’s Mount Vernon,” George and Martha Washington’s historic Virginia estate.)
