The Jamestown Restaurants And Water Taxi You'll Want To Enjoy This Spring

I’ve over-posted about the Jamestown Windmill since approximately 2015. We actually drove by on Thursday afternoon and while I am not absolutely certain, it sure looks as though it’s still closed to tours. I say this because as of yesterday the blades are (sadly) still not up. And hiking Beavertail isn’t my thing. (Hellooo, bugs and the possibility of sunburn.) Even without those two iconic destinations, though, there are plenty of fantastic sites around that historic town to enjoy this spring and summer and I’m spotlighting 4 of them today.

First of all there’s the Hop-On Hop-Off Ferry to Newport (I refer to it as a water taxi in the title) which starts running again in May. It makes stops at Fort Adams, Ann Street Pier, Perriotti Park, and Rose Island Lighthouse, where Jennifer Lawrence famously hosted her rehearsal dinner when she married Cooke Maroney in Newport in the Fall of 2019. It’s an under-the-radar (a lot of people who live elsewhere in the state have no idea it exists) relaxing way to toggle back and forth between JT and NPT during what’s sure to be one of the busiest tourist seasons in ages.

Next on my list is — no surprise — the East Ferry Deli. If you haven’t had the pleasure of tearing into some old school sandwiches (from an extensive menu that has something for every style of eating out there, from carnivore to vegan and everything in-between) from here, you don’t know what you’re missing. Everything is super fresh and scrumptious. After Shayna’s in Wickford, this is an eatery I am obsessed with and will go way out of my way to lunch at.

I first discovered the Village Hearth Bakery & Cafe on Watson back in 2016 when an Instagram friend urged me to check it out. The locals used to rave about their fresh bread and Sunday night pizza. Then during everything-that’s-been-going-on-over-the-last-year, the forner owners changed their hours of operation to Sunday mornings only and we just couldn’t seem to get there before they closed up shop at 12noon. Well, surprise, VHBC now has new owners and I hear it’s BETTER than ever. (They’ve changed their “pizza night” to Fridays now and if I lived closer, I’d be first in line.) For right now, they are only open weekends, but I hear they will be expanding their hours and offerings real soon.

If, like me, you are sticking with outdoor dining this year, you’ll be jazzed to know that J22 on Narragansett Ave. apparently has (applause, applause) outside seating! We’ve had some pretty marvelous lunches there (see photos above for one that included incredible pasta and a memorable Moscow Mule for me) over the years and I am chomping at the bit to get back now that I know they have an al fresco option.

As always, if you patronize any of these spots after reading this post, please do let them know you found out about them via Patty J and PattyJ.com.
